Fractional charge in the noise of Luttinger liquid systems

چکیده
The current noise of a voltage biased interacting quantum wire adiabatically connected to metallic leads is computed in presence of an impurity in the wire. We find that in the weak backscattering limit the Fano factor characterizing the ratio between shot noise and backscattering current crucially depends on the noise frequency ω relative to the ballistic frequency vF /gL, where vF is the Fermi velocity, g the Luttinger liquid interaction parameter, and L the length of the wire. In contrast to chiral Luttinger liquids, the noise is not only due to the Poissonian backscattering of fractionally charged quasiparticles at the impurity, but also depends on Andreevtype reflections of plasmons at the contacts, so that the frequency dependence of the noise needs to be analyzed to extract the fractional charge e = eg of the bulk excitations. We show that the frequencies needed to see interaction effects in the Fano factor are within experimental reach.

Measuring Fractional Charge in Carbon Nanotubes
The Luttinger model of the one-dimensional Fermi gas is the cornerstone of modern understanding of interacting electrons in one dimension. In fact, the enormous class of systems whose universal behavior is adiabatically connected to it are now deemed Luttinger liquids. Recently, it has been shown that metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes are almost perfectly described by the Luttinger Hamilt...

We study the zero frequency noise in an interacting quantum wire connected to leads, in the presence of an impurity. In the absence of quasiparticle decoherence the zerofrequency noise is that of a non-interacting wire. However, if the collective, fractionallycharged modes have a finite lifetime, we find that the zero-frequency noise may still exhibit signatures of charge fractionalization, suc...
متن کاملAharonov-bohm Effect in Luttinger Liquid and Beyond*
In systems with the spin-charge separation, the period of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillation becomes half of the flux quantum. This effect is at least related to the fact that for the creation of the holons (spinons) are needed two electrons. The effect is illustrated on the example of the Hubbard Hamiltonian with the aid of the bosonization including topological numbers and exists also in the ...
متن کامل2 N ov 2 00 6 Colloquium : The spin - incoherent Luttinger liquid
In contrast to the well known Fermi liquid theory of three dimensions, interacting one-dimensional and quasi one-dimensional systems of fermions are described at low energy by an effective theory known as Luttinger liquid theory. This theory is expressed in terms of collective many-body excitations that show exotic behavior such as spin-charge separation. Luttinger liquid theory is commonly app...
